Summary of TedTalk Video (Texting is Killing Language by John McWhorter)

Some people agree that texting decline of writing ability in young people in US and the hole world today. However, we have to see it in another way that texting is a miracolous thing kind of emerge complexity  happening right now. In which case, texting is not writing. To see it in a large point of view, we need to understand defining of language in truth. Basically, language is existence perhaps around 150.000 years ago or at least in 80.000 years ago. At that time, language is used only to talk. Next, writing came along much later. Writing has certain advantageous When we write, because it is a consious process, we can look back of writing. The context of using writing is large compared to just talking.

Moreover, Nobody speak in literature in their daily lives. The linguists have shown that we commonly use about 7-10 words when we talk. Even there are many more messages, but it does not reflect much effect as written. That is called language. Language includes two things, both spoken and written. As time passes, naturally formed a relationship determined between speaking and writing.One of them is, in the current era, it was very popular the speaker talk as same way as writing. Then, if we can speak based on writing, its possible that sometimes might write like speaking. The problem is inappropriate mechanical material that techically, it is harder to write the words sounded using hand or stenographer. Then, at the time when we have electrical typewrite and computer keyboard that possible to type as fast as people talk, and it can bring the message in short time, that time is the “Texting” was appeared.

However, texting doesn’t has good structure. As a result, no one care of capital or punctuation while they sending SMS, and it is also occur when we are in talking. Texting is fingered speech because we write the way we talk. It is very natural instink  that some people think  the texting has gone wrong and  claims as decline of writing because lack of stucture principle. However, the matter that we seeing right now in fingered speech is a emerging complexity. To understand of its, we have to observe in a new kind of language which the new structure appeared. For example, in Texting we usually hear the word LOL has a meaning of “Laughing Out Loud” that use in amusing context. But in the past time, LOL has different meaning from now. Last time LOL refer to empathy.  Another example is the word SLASH. Last time slash use in sentence such as ‘we are going to held party slash networking’. However, today slash used by young people to change the topic conversation. The linguists mentions that is a pragmatic particle where the meaning of word change along with time passed.

So, now we have enough battery for one new construction that are developed. But it easy to think Texting still has something wrong kind of less structure. Infact, the people who worry of lack structure of both speaking or writing has been already existed since pedant writing in Latin around 63 A.D. that Texting doesn’t appear yet. It will continue during the planet still spinning even probably Texting will be extinct.
